Barbara Louise Pearson was the eldest child of Bob and Louise Pearson who were living in Melbourne, Australia when she was born on March 15, 1931. Within a few years the family had settled in Glendale, California. Her father died suddenly when she was only 16, which surely affected her life and future. Even so, after high school she pursued an education in nursing that led to a long and rewarding career. After earning her RN, she received a scholarship to UC Berkeley to pursue a bachelor's in nursing education. There, she met a promising undergrad, Rex Young; they were married nine months later on December 27, 1953, during his Christmas holiday from the Marine Corps. The Corps moved them frequently in the early years. By the time they purchased their first home in Bakersfield, the Young family was expecting daughter #4. Her career and family animated Barbara's life as she threw herself into its joys and challenges. She was extremely handy with creative projects of all sorts, and an excellent and prolific seamstress, awake in the wee hours before holidays and events adding the final touch, usually "times four." She was first mate to Rex on his sailboat, Girl Scout Cookie Chairman, summer camp nurse, Sunday School teacher, VBS organizer, docent at the home of Molly Bown in Denver, active room mother and PTA volunteer, and always up for the next adventure in travel across the U.S. and abroad. When she retired, it was from the position of school nurse, where she served the children of Kern County for two decades. She will be remembered as one who rarely said "no" and put the care and interests of others ahead of her own. She was blessed with eight beautiful grandchildren. Her family smiles when they say she could fall asleep at the drop of a hat, even during a sermon.
She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Rex J. Young, her daughters Tricia Holian, Pamela (Mickey) Mattox, Susan Reagan, and Julianne (Marc) Saltzer, and grandchildren Sarah, Joel, Samuel, Clement, Emily, Jack, Adam and Laura.
Please consider a gift to Optimal Hospice in her honor.
