Brian Lee Johnson, born on July 31, 1966 in Bakersfield, California, suddenly left this world on June 14, 2023 to go be with our Lord and Savior.
Brian grew up in Bakersfield and attended South High School, graduating in 1984. He dedicated his adult life to working in environmental and oilfield safety in California, Hawaii and Guam. Renowned for his skills as a heavy equipment operator, Brian was one of the best in his field. He spent his later years as a Safety Specialist for Gene Watson Construction and later for Chevron.
Nicknamed “Fly’n Brian” for his passion for all things fast, Brian had a deep love for speed and adventure. Whether it was dirt bikes, street bikes, go-carts or his beloved hot rods, he pursued his passions with unmatched enthusiasm. Brian’s hot rods earned him several awards, including the prestigious and the first ever Kid’s Choice Award at The Classics at Pismo Beach – an accomplishment of which he was immensely proud. Cruising around town in his hot rod was a relaxing and joyous experience for Brian, but you could hear him coming from a mile away!
Beyond his need for speed, Brian was a charismatic and fun-loving person with a huge heart. He was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need, regardless of whether they were friends or strangers. He found solace in listening to all genres of music, tinkering on his hot rods, and traveling. One of his cherished annual traditions was attending the MotoGP motorcycle races in Laguna Seca with his older brother Kenny.
Brian had a mischievous side to him. With his great sense of humor, he loved cracking jokes and playing practical jokes on his co-workers and friends. No matter how upset he might have made you, Brian had the unique ability to turn any situation around with laughter.
Brian was preceded in death by his favorite nephew, Kenny Johnson, by his dad Jimmy Cossey and by his grandparents Nealie Ann and Earl Williams; Lloyd “Lucky” and Vadafae “Dixie” Johnson; and Amy and Kendrick Cossey.
Brian is survived by his mom Judee Johnson of Lompoc; dad Ray Johnson and wife Julie of Bakersfield; daughter Kayla Garrison (Bryan) of Yucaipa; son Tyler Johnson of Burkeville, Texas; brother and sister-in-law Kenny and Brenda Johnson; brother and sister-in-law Randy and Candy Johnson; five grandchildren; and wife Sandie, along with numerous other family members and so many friends. Brian had a profound impact on the lives of many, and his absence will be deeply felt.
A celebration of Brian’s life will be held on Saturday, July 22, 2023 at 3:00 pm at Kern River Family Mortuary Chapel, 1900 N. Chester.
May Brian rest in peace, forever remembered for his zest for life,
warm heart, and infectious laughter
