Fun Memories
Mommy loved to play music all kinds…. She especially liked the song Wooley Bully she was known to start this early in the morning 6 am ish , she would also turn the volume all the way up to be sure you could hear it even while asleep I remember one time Joyce & butch received this special gift as well .
Mommy was a great Baker she made amazing Bread and gave us her famous bread for Christmas. She also made the best chewy cookies always trying to make them better and better for Daddy. She always had a special ability to taste the different seasonings in food and could bake with a little of this and a little of that to make things taste just right.
I remember to this day how to make bread. She taught me this before I graduated high school ………. Get the big yellow Tupperware bowl fill it ¾ full of flour A scant handful of salt, 2 handfuls of sugar. make a well in the middle stir the yeast mixture in a quart jar (2 TlBS. Yeast, warm water, little bit of sugar) and let it raise a couple times then stir it down. Mix all together butter the top and let it raise then punch down and rise again. Make into loaves and bake 350 until when knocked on the top it sounds hollow
Mommy loved to eat French bread except she liked to take all the insides out throw it in the garbage and butter the crust and eat that. Kristie liked to rescue the middle of the bread before it made it to the garbage.
As a child I remember my mom , getting cheese & green peppers slices, and a book this is how she would take her breaks.
The grandkids, remember her driving in the car and if she had to put on the brakes, she would always put her arm across to brace them from falling into the dash. Even when they were bigger than her.
Also one summer morning, with curlers in her hair, she opened the door with 22 in hand and shot a peacock out of the tree across the road at 12 mile ranch. (Brandon remembers it being the back door and off the grain bin ) not sure which is right maybe both as the peacocks were gone, and the peacock stopped being a rooster at 5 am in the morning….
Another fond memory is the gum ball machine not sure when this appeared, but grandkids could come get pennies from her jar and get 2 gumballs this was something, I know my children enjoyed when they were young. Laynee & Luke, and John Hall kids loved this even as a teenager Mommy tells of Mason Hall coming over to give them the sacrament and stopping by the gum ball machine. this tradition was carried on when they moved to Bakersfield and all my grandkids loved going to grandma ‘s for gumballs. Little Harvey (5 yrs old) after being told grandmother had passed away, He asked Who are we going to get gumballs from.
