Jimmy Wayne Hughey
September 6, 1944 – February 21, 2025
Jimmy Wayne Hughey was born on September 6, 1944, at his family’s farm in Porterville, California, and passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by loved ones, in Bakersfield, California, on February 21, 2025.
He dedicated his life to helping others, both through his career in social work and in the way he showed up for the people around him. He had a gift for making people feel heard, offering wisdom when it was needed and laughter when it was unexpected. There was never a room he couldn’t brighten with his sharp wit and endless supply of stories.
Jimmy proudly served the United States Army in the 8th Infantry, Armored Division, spending time overseas in Germany during the Vietnam War. His sense of duty and service extended far beyond his military years, shaping the way he lived his life—always putting others first.
A man of many interests, he had a deep love for history, poetry, and the arts, always eager to learn and share what he knew. He also had a lifelong love for horses and ranching, finding fulfillment in caring for the animals and the land. His faith was an important part of his life, and he was a dedicated member of St. Francis Catholic Church in Bakersfield.
Above all else, his greatest joy was his family. Nothing made him happier than spending time with those he loved, sharing stories, laughter, and lessons that will live on for generations.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Bill and Josephine; his sister, Shirley; and many beloved family members. He is survived by his wife, Denise; his son, Tommy & wife Stephanie; his brother, Robert; his stepchildren, Karen and Steven; and his grandchildren, Sarah, William, Jacob, and Xander, who will forever carry his love and wisdom in their hearts.
A service honoring Jimmy’s life will be held on Friday May 2, 2025, at 10:00 AM at the National Cemetery in Bakersfield, California. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Mare Riding Center (M.A.R.E.), a nonprofit providing equine-assisted therapies for children, adults, and veterans with special needs, or Hoffmann Hospice of Bakersfield.
The family would like to thank Hoffmann Hospice of Bakersfield as well as all of the medical professionals who have helped throughout the past year.
