Melvin Joy Whittington

Mel as he liked to be called was born February 11, 1935 in Jefferson county Oklahoma to parents Melvin and Mary Whittington. He moved to California in 1945 with his parents and four siblings. He graduated from Kern High school in Bakersfield. He worked many years in construction and later became a building contractor. Mel built many homes in and around Bakersfield and the Stockton area.

Mel loved gatherings with friends and family. He enjoyed dancing, gardening, dominoes, Corn hole and other games.

Mel is survived by his children Janell Earnshaw, Ron Whittington and siblings Dwayne Whittington, Ken Whittington, Sue Morgan, grandchildren Craig Hamlet, Jennifer Hamilton, Misty Steelman Delgadillo, David Whittington and Dana Cronwell, Jamie Steelman and several great grandchildren that knew his as grandpa beard.

Mel was a loving son, brother, father and grandfather. His memory will be cherished. 

Celebration of life will be Saturday October 7, 2013 at 4 pm. Services will beheld at Kern River Family Mortuary 1900 N. Chester Ave. Bakersfield, Ca 93308
