Mike was born in 1936 in Sharon Pa, a small town on the Pennsylvania Ohio border. His parents Walter and Margaret Dunham were born in the same town. Mike had two siblings, Patti and Dennis.
Mike went to school in Youngstown Ohio. He enjoyed regaling the family with stories of his youth at the pool hall and having to watch his brother and sister.
After high school he joined the U.S. Navy. He was assigned to a sea plane unit. He liked to say he spent four years in the Navy without being on a ship. He was honorably discharged in 1958 after serving four years.
Mike Moved to New Castle Pa where his family had relocated. He began working at J.C. Penny and was accepted for the Management training program. While working there he met Gloria Callahan. They married in 1961 and had their only child, Michael, in 1962.
Mike had a 43-year career in retail management working for J.C. Penny and the May Co. He became a store manager for both companies and was used as a trouble shooter for ailing stores. His work ethic was unmatched. He had high standards and at the same time a concern for employees and their welfare.
Mike retired in 2002. In 2006 Gloria passed away, leaving a large void in his life. Mike Married Joyce Knudsen in 2008. They remained married until her death. Mike found solace and meaning from his bible study group at Valley Baptist Church.
He was a fan of Pittsburgh sports. He enjoyed the Steelers and Pirates. He would often talk about Bill Mazaroski’s homerun that helped the Pirates beat the New York Yankees in the 1960 World Series.
Mike passed away from complication of Congestive heart failure. He is survived by his son Michael, Daughter-in-law Kathy, his sister Patti, grandchildren Ethan, Benjamin and his wife Kaitlyn, and his dogs Misty and Andy.
A memorial service will be held June 23rd at 11:00 a.m., at the Hoffmann Hospice Home chapel. Refreshments to follow.
