Loss is never easy and it still does not feel real. Michael Travis Smith Sr. was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. He was born on April 25, 1961 in Santa Maria, California. He fought a long and tough battle with cancer for nearly two years, until he passed away on August 07, 2024.
He had a sharp mind and was the toughest, most kind hearted person I've ever known. Even while going through all of the pain and exhaustion, he was always looking for ways to help others and make sure everyone was taken care of. He did not worry about much, but his only true fear was not being able to take care of his family.
He saw hope in everything and always pushed the ones he cared about to be their best selves. He was carried by his faith and family, and believed he could achieve any goal he set for himself.
He was very proud of his accomplishments and proud of his family. Michael once said, joining the Marine Corps was one of his proudest moments.
He retired from the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation after over twenty years and was also the union chapter president.
He enjoyed being around family, throwing parties, karaoke, shooting guns, going to Las Vegas, politics, and watching movies.
He leaves behind his wife, several children and grandchildren, siblings, and many friends. He will never be forgotten and the memories he left will be forever in our hearts.
Services will be held at the Bakersfield National Cemetery on August 15, 2024, at 0915 hours.
