Olen "Wayne" Hughes entered into eternal peace surrounded by his family on January 30, 2014 at the age of 70. Wayne was born on July 7, 1943 to Olen and Aimee Hughes in Hanford, California weighing in at a whopping 14 lbs. Wayne was the oldest of four children and the family resided in Bakersfield, California. After graduating from Bakersfield High School in 1961, Wayne worked as a school bus driver until receiving his official draft notice to serve in the military. On April 21, 1965, he was inducted into the army at Fort Bliss, Texas where he remained until he was sent to serve his country proudly in Vietnam. At the end of his service he met and married the love of his life, Inge. They spent 47 years together and had two endearing, charming but yet ornery daughters, Jamie and Christie.
Wayne was in the transportation sector for almost 50 years. He was a dedicated driver who enjoyed seeing the sights on the road. During times of rest, Wayne would enjoy spending time with his family, fishing up in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, and traveling with Inge. Wayne had a love of cars his whole life and appreciated the fine details in American made muscle cars/trucks.
Wayne was predeceased in death by his mother and father, brother, Lonnie Hughes, and niece, Gayle Frisbie. Wayne is survived by his wife of 47 years, Inge, his daughters and son-in-laws, Robert and Jamie Quintana, and David and Christie Meek as well as his spirited grandchildren Ali, Makayla, Andrew, Emma and Olivia. He is also survived by his two loving sisters and brother-in-laws, Louis and Carolyn Frisbie and Leroy and Bonnie Bush, devoted families abroad in Germany and many nieces and nephews. Further, Wayne is survived by his aunts, Geraldine and Lindsey Post, Pauline Thompson, Imajean and Allen Barrett, and uncle, Leon and Mary Hughes. Wayne's quick wit humor and gentle spirit touched many lives; He will be deeply missed.
Services for Wayne will be held on February 6, 2014 at 2 pm at the National Cemetery in Arvin, CA. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that a donation be made in his name to the Greater Los Angeles Fisher House Foundation. The Fisher House was instrumental in keeping Wayne and Inge together as he endured endless medical treatments at the West Los Angeles Veterans Hospital for the past seven years. We are ever so grateful for their services they provide to ALL of our veterans.
