Phyllis Adabelle Eskew Ash was born February 7, 1932, in Sallisaw, Oklahoma, and passed away at her home on Wednesday, December 12, 2012, leaving behind her husband of 53 years. Diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease at age 65, Phyllis remained at home under the care of her husband Ed Ash and her oldest daughter Shelley. Ed and Shelley are especially thankful to Roisin Allen and Stephanie Yorba of Odyssey Hospice for their support and help in caring for Phyllis.
Phyllis was a 1950 Delano High School graduate and married Ed Ash in 1959. A beautiful woman who laughed easily, Phyllis had a way of making others feel welcomed and loved. Her talents were many, but she especially liked to draw and paint, and the family is honored to have many of her framed pieces in their own homes. Phyllis also loved to read, crochet, and dance; she spent many hours filling in crossword puzzles with her sister Fontia and playing cards with her family and friends. The Avila Beach summer vacations were some of the most memorable times for Phyllis and her family.
She was preceded in death by her parents George Lafayette Eskew and Ada Belle Thomas Eskew, her brother Foy Eskew, and her sister Fontia Sellers.
She is survived by her loving husband Ed Ash (aka Uncle Ken); brother Farrell (and wife Ollie) of Delano; son Patrick Ash (and wife Connie) of Irvine; Shelley Ash of Bakersfield; Daniel Ash (and wife Bridget) of Lexington, KY; Pam Boyles (and husband Robert) of Bakersfield; 8 grandchildren: Steven, Sharon, Eric, John, George, Sarah, Joseph, and Eddie; great- granddaughter Emily Boyles; and several cousins, in-laws, nieces, and nephews. Phyllis was a loving and loved daughter, sister, wife, mother, aunt, grandmother, and friend.
The family would like especially to thank Roisin Allen and Stephanie Yorba of Odyssey Hospice. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
Viewing and visitation for Phyllis A. Ash will be held on Monday, Dec. 17, at North Kern Family Mortuary,1900 N. Chester Ave. from 5 to 8 p.m. Graveside services will be held Tuesday, Dec. 18, at Hillcrest Memorial Park, 9101 Kern Canyon Rd. at 2 p.m.
